How Your Beef Helps Heal the Environment
Did you know that properly managed grass lands sequester significant amounts of carbon from the atmosphere? Actively growing plants absorb carbon dioxide from the air and form sugars. Part of those sugars are released from the roots into the ground to feed microorganisms, which provide other nutrients to the plants. This effectively “locks” carbon in the soil.
When the plants are pruned back, some of the roots die and decay releasing more carbon into the soil. Grazing livestock support the cycle by clipping off the plants and encouraging new growth. They also trample residue into the ground providing more feed for microorganisms in the soil.
